Shenpei Wang

Biography:

Professor Shen-Pei Wang is tenured full professor of Computer Science at College of Computer and Information Science of Northeastern University, Boston, MA, USA.

He is Fellow of IAPR (International Association of Pattern Recognition) and co-founding chief editor of IJPRAI(International Journal of Pattern Recognition and Artificial Intelligence) (with Germany's (Deutschland) Prof. Xiaoyi Jiang ), and WSP MPAI Book Series (with Switerland's Prof. Horst Bunke ). In fall 1996, Dr. Wang has been elected as Otto-Von-Guericke Distinguished Guest Professor at the Graphics and Simulations Lab of the University of Magdeburg (near Berlin) of Deutschland (Germany). Dr. Wang has been visiting at University of Calgary's Biometrics Technology Laboratory, Calgary, Canada from 2006-2007 as iCORE (Informatics Circle of Research Excellence) visiting Professor , where he published his 23rd book in July 2007, entitled : IMAGE PATTERN RECOGNITION --- Synthesis and Analysis in Biometrics by WSP (World Scientific Publishing Co.) headquartered at Singapore.

He is now Zi-Jiang Visiting Chair Professor at the Department of Computer Science and Technology of prestigious East China Normal University, Shanghai, China. Professor Wang has also served as Honorary Advisor Professor of Xiamen University and Sichuan University of China.

Dr. Wang got his B.S. in Electronic Engineering from National Chiao Tung University (Hsin Chu), M.S. in Electrical Engineering from National Taiwan University, M.S. in Information and Computer Science from Georgia Institute of Technology, Ph.D. in Computer Science from Oregon State University. He has been Visiting Scientist at MIT AI Lab from 1989-1990, and Research Consultant at MIT Sloan School since 1990, as well as adjunct faculty of Computer Science at Harvard University Extension School since 1985.

For the past decade, he has been invited to give lectures in many countries in America, Asia and Europe including Germany (Deutschland, both West and East), China (both Mainland and Taiwan), Canada, France, Japan, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Spain, England, South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, Netherlands, Belgium, Israel, Australia, and USA. He has served as the Chair of IAPR-SSPR TC-2 (Structural and Syntactic Pattern Recognition) for 4 years (1992-1996). He has also organized many international conferences, including IWPIA'97 (Hiroshima), ICCPOL97 (Hong Kong), SSPR'96 (Leipzig - Bach's hometown), and ICCPOL95 (Hawaii). He is Conference Co-chair of ICMI99 (Int. Conf. on Multimodal Interface), in China, co-sponsored by IEEE and ACM, and International Conference on Oriental Language Computing, Chicago, July, 2000, and International Conference on Chinese Language Computing at Feng-Chia University, Taiwan Province, ROC, July 2002. He is also the committee member and invited speaker for ICVI'98 (International Conference on Visual Interface), Vancouver B.C., and ICPR/SSPR'98 (International Conference on Pattern Recognition), Sydney, Australia, and SPIE's ISMIP'98 (International Symposium of Multispectral Image Processing), Wuhan, China. He also serves as Program Committee member for the: IWCIA'2000 (Int. Workshop on Combinatorial Image Analysis), July, France, ICARCV'2000 (Int. Conf. on Control, Automation, Robotics and Vision), Singapore, December, 2000, IAPR Machine Learning and Data Mining (MLDM2003 and 2005), July, 2003 at Leipzig (Bach's hometown), Deutschland, and BT2004 , Int. Workshop on Biometric Technology, June 2004, Calgary, Canada.

Dr. Wang is a general conference co-chair of the IAPR's 18th ICPR International Conference on Pattern Recognition (together with France's Prof. Guy Lorette and Hong Kong's Prof. Y. Y. Tang), August, 2006 at Hong Kong, China. Prof. Wang serves as Program Vice-Chair and Distinguished International Advisor of the IEEE-BIBE2007 at Harvard Medical and gave a keynote planery lecture on "Biometrics Intelligence Information Systems and Applications”. In BIBE2007, he's honored and received a Plaque of Outstanding Achievement Award from Conference General Chair Prof. Jack Yang and IEEE-SMC President Prof. Larry Hall. He also gave a tutorial on "IPR and Biometrics" at the IEEE-SMC 2007, Montreal, Canada, October 2007. In addition, Dr. Wang is keynote and tutorial speaker at e-Forensics 2008 , Adelaide, Australia, January 2008, and an invited speaker at IEEE-ISI2008 , (International Conference on Intelligence and Security Informatics) , Taipei, R.O.C., June, 2008.
